Maximising Minimal Living

Apartment living is an increasing trend within large cities. While living in the CBD is ideal for the convenience of shops and restaurants being located close to home, the issue is the small spaces available to live in. Many people find themselves in a pokey studio apartment with no privacy and the idea of entertaining friends and family can be significantly reduced with the former private areas such as bedrooms and office spaces becoming the very public living environment as well. The concept behind this design is to create that privacy within a studio apartment setting and to optimize the living environment to cater for the sociological, physical and psychological needs of the client.

The design was constructed for exhibition at Grand Designs Live, Sydney in 2014. The structure consisted of a ply wood shell with the interiors painted to suit the specified environment. The geometric feature wall was also a custom design specifically for this exhibit.

This design concept and prototype won the Gold Medal in the Rooms by Design competition at the Grand Designs Live Home show in Sydney in 2014.
